On Tuesday and Wednesday evening, the 25th German Television Awards were presented in a number of categories – RTL Deutschland and UFA received a total of four awards. In the format category “Best Entertainment Reality” and the individual category “Best Direction Entertainment”, formats of RTL Deutschland were recognized with the German Television Award; UFA received two awards for “Ich bin! Margot Friedländer”. In the runup, RTL Deutschland pocketed a total of 15 nominations – eight for RTL+, five for RTL, and two for Vox; UFA received five nominations as a production company.

One of the coveted awards went to the RTL show “Die Verräter – Vertraue Niemandem!”, a production of Tower Productions, a subsidiary of All3Media, commissioned by RTL in the category “Best Entertainment Reality”. At the “Nacht der Kreativen”, which took place one evening before the big award presentation gala, Mark Achterberg received the German Television Award in the individual category “Best Direction Entertainment” for the second consecutive time for the RTL show “Let’s Dance”, produced by Seapoint/BBC Studios. “Ich bin! Margot Friedländer”, a production of the UFA subsidiary UFA Documentary for ZDF, won in the category “Best Movie made for Television/Miniseries”. Before, Martin Menzel won in the category “Best Editing Fiction” at the “Nacht der Kreativen”, also for his work on “Ich bin! Margot Friedländer”.

“Wonderful talents in front of and behind the camera”

“Congratulations to the winners of the German Television Award!,” said Inga Leschek, Chief Content Officer RTL Deutschland. “Together with All3Media, we are absolutely delighted about the award for best reality format of the year: ‘Die Verräter’, absolutely fantastically presented by Sonja Zietlow, which will be back on RTL+ on October 10 to launch into its second season with a Halloween special and will return to RTL next spring. Sincere congratulations also to Mark Achterberg, who always transforms our most successful show, ‘Let’s Dance’, into captivating and breathtaking pictorial fireworks and won the award for the second consecutive time in the ‘Best Direction Entertainment’ category. Let us continue to create excellent content that will fascinate the biggest possible audience!”

Marc Lepetit, Managing Director and Producer UFA Documentary, said: “When Margot Friedländer said the words ‘That’s how it was!’ during a screening, we were all deeply moved. The feeling the movie triggered was a mixture of hope and exhaustion – exactly the feeling with which she tried to escape the regime's captors. This film was made in the realm of documentary and mixes in a large-scale fictional production – with terrific actors and wonderful talents in front of and behind the camera. With the two awards for editing for Martin Menzel and for best movie, ‘Ich bin! Margot Friedländer’ receives the honor we all wished to get for this work. It is an important movie, more important than ever today, and it leaves behind a feeling. This is what this production based on the scripts by Hannah and Raymond Ley achieved. I am grateful to them and we are very pleased with the recognition by the German Television Awards.”

The donors of the German Television Awards are ARD, Deutsche Telekom, RTL, ZDF, and SAT.1. Since 2023, the streaming providers Disney+, Netflix, and Prime Video have been aboard as partners. The awards annually recognize outstanding productions and their makers in front of and behind the camera in fiction, entertainment, and information in up to 30 categories. An expert jury chaired by producer and former UFA CEO Wolf Bauer evaluated formats in the period from July 1, 2023 until June 30, 2024 and picked the winners.
