‘Moonage Daydream’ Opens In Theaters September 16

BMG’s new film “Moonage Daydream” opens in theaters and Imax theaters worldwide on September 16. It is the first documentary about David Bowie officially sanctioned by the executors of his estate. “Moonage Daydream” was jointly produced and financed by BMG and Live Nation Productions, and directed by the renowned filmmaker Brett Morgen.

On September 16, BMG will release its latest music documentary “Moonage Daydream” in cinemas and Imax theaters worldwide. It is the first documentary about rock legend David Bowie officially sanctioned by the executors of his estate. The singer had died in 2016. As reported, the documentary by the renowned filmmaker Brett Morgen already scored rave reviews when it premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in late May. “Extraordinary. A unique documentary about one of the greatest rock stars of all time. Exhilarating,” wrote “Rolling Stone” magazine at the time. The release date was first announced on David Bowie’s official social media accounts.

In his 140-minute documentary, Brett Morgen, who has already made films about the Rolling Stones and about Kurt Cobain, synthesized David Bowie’s music and art into a sublime kaleidoscopic experiential cinematic odyssey that explores Bowie’s creative, spiritual, and philosophical journey. With never-before-seen footage, performances, and music, the film is guided exclusively by Bowie’s narration. The film contains 47 music tracks mixed from the original tapes, and Bowie’s long-time musical collaborator and friend Tony Visconti served as its music producer. BMG and its production partner Live Nation Productions have licensed U.S. distribution rights for “Moonage Daydream” to Neon, while Universal Entertainment International will distribute the film outside the U.S. North American cable and streaming rights have been licensed to HBO and HBO Max.

The film, including its title track “Moonage Daydream,” draws extensively on Bowie’s 1970 to 1977 song catalog, in which BMG has a 25-percent stake, including “Changes,” “Starman,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “The Jean Genie,” “All The Young Dudes,” “Life on Mars,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Fame,” “Young Americans,” and “Golden Years.” “Moonage Daydream” is the first film in a multi-picture deal between Brett Morgen and BMG for IMAX productions. The film was conceived as a theatrical experience from the outset and will be shown in IMAX theaters in select markets. In the IMAX process, films are projected in higher resolution on especially large screen areas that almost completely fill the viewer’s field of vision.
