‘Maria’ Nominated For An Academy Award
The Fremantle-produced movie “Maria” is in the running for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. The winners of this year’s “Oscars” will be announced in Hollywood on March 2. “Maria,” starring Angelina Jolie, is about the last days of opera diva Maria Callas.
When this year’s Academy Awards are presented at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on March 2, Fremantle will have hopes of taking home the world’s foremost important film prize. The feature film “Maria” starring Angelina Jolie has been nominated for “Best Cinematography.” It was produced by Fremantle’s Italian subsidiary The Apartment Pictures, Komplizen Film, and Fabula Productions, the film company of Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, with whom Fremantle has a first-look deal.
Based on true events, “Maria” tells the turbulent, beautiful and tragic story of the life of Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie), one of the world’s greatest opera singers, and revisits her last days in 1970s Paris. Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film was shot in Paris, Greece, Budapest and Milan. Fremantle signed an international film deal with the movie’s lead actress, Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, in 2022.
In addition to “Maria,” Bertelsmann is also involved in another Oscar contender, the movie “Conclave”, which has been nominated in eight categories. The film is based on eponymous novel by best-selling author Robert Harris, which was published by Penguin Random House in English-speaking countries and Germany. The Italian Fremantle subsidiary Wildside was also involved as a “service producer” in the filming of “Conclave” in Italy. Moreover, director Edward Berger and Fremantle are connected through a multi-year production agreement for TV projects.
