Kylie Minogue’s ‘Padam Padam’ Certified Platinum
21 months after its release, the song has passed the 600,000 sales mark in the U.K..
In June 2023, BMG published the song “Padam Padam” as a pre-release from their new album “Tension”, which was announced for September of the same year. And 21 months later, the song is still a worldwide success story: “Padam Padam” recently passed the 600,000 sales mark in the U.K. and has been officially certified platinum. This is the fifth time Kylie has gone platinum in the important British music market: She previously achieved this distinction for “I Should Be So Lucky” (1987), “Especially For You” (1988), “Can't Get You Out of My Head” (2001), and “Santa Baby” (2007).
“Padam Padam” was produced by Lostboy (Griff, Anne-Marie, Tiësto) and delivers everything that fans love about the singer. From the vocals to the infectious chorus to the electronic drumbeat, “Padam Padam” is a “Kylie classic with recognition value,” according to BMG at the time of its release. The video for the song was shot in Los Angeles under the direction of Sophie Muller and shows Kylie dressed from head to toe in red; she wears a tailor-made catsuit by Mugler and a transparent cape.
Part of the ‘Tension Tour’
The album “Tension” itself achieved Gold status earlier this year. With more than 380 million streams, “Padam Padam” also achieved a huge digital presence, ranging from dance floors to social media trends. Critics were just as enamored, with the song landing in end-of-year lists from the likes of “NME,” “Pitchfork,” “Rolling Stone,” “The Guardian,” and more. The song also earned Kylie a Grammy for Best Pop Dance Recording last year, as well as an ARIA Award, Australia’s equivalent to the Brit Award, for “Best Pop Release.”
Kylie Minogue’s “Tension II," the successor to “Tension," was released in October 2024, likewise produced by Bertelsmann Marketing Services subsidiary Sonopress in Gütersloh, and likewise soared to the top of the charts in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. It marked the tenth time Kylie topped the charts in the U.K. over the course of her career. The 13-song release was also Minogue's fifth consecutive #1 album in the UK since signing with BMG in 2017 – after “Golden” (2018), “Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection” (2019), “Disco” (2020), and “Tension” (2023).
“Padam Padam” is of course also part of every Kylie Minogue performance on her worldwide ‘Tension Tour’, her biggest tour since 2011. The series of concerts began on February 15 in Minogue's native Australia, followed by Asia, North America and the UK. The tour will then continue with shows in Germany, including Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Stuttgart, before heading to Central and South America. Her last stop will be in Monterrey, Mexico on August 26. Since March 20, the artist can also be seen in the new Netflix series “The Residence”, a TV drama by screenwriter and “Bridgerton” producer Shonda Rhimes, in which she plays herself in a supporting role and also sings.
Over the course of her musical career, Kylie Minogue has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, generated five billion streams and released eight British #1 albums. Her numerous accolades now include four BRIT Awards, two Grammys and 18 ARIA Awards. She is the only artist to have had a #1 album in the U.K. charts for five consecutive decades. The BMG star was honored with a Billboard Icon Award at the Women in Music Awards in February 2024, and in March of the same year received the Global Icon Award at the Brit Awards, the U.K.'s most prestigious music awards, for her music career spanning nearly four decades.
