Afya Acquires Grupo Unidom

Afya, a leading provider of medical education, training and digital solutions for medical professionals in Brazil, has acquired Grupo Unidom, a group that offers university degree programs at four locations in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The takeover increases the number of medical study seats at Afya approved by the Brazilian state to around 3,500.

Afya is further expanding its number of medical study places in Brazil with the acquisition of Grupo Unidom. Afya, a Bertelsmann Education Group subsidiary, is a leading provider of medical education and training as well as digital solutions for medical professionals in Brazil. The acquisition of Unidom Participações with its two companies Unidosmpedro and Faculdade Dom Luiz, which was completed in May, increases the number of government-approved annual medical study seats at Afya by another 300 to around 3,500. In other words, 3,500 new students can now study medicine at one of Afya's 30 medical faculties throughout the country every year.

Grupo Unidom has four campuses in the Brazilian state of Bahia in the east of the country. They are located in the state capital Salvador as well as in Luis Eduardo Magalhães, Barreiras, and Ribeira do Pombal. Salvador is the largest location with around 1,100 students and the medicine course. A total of 3,133 Bachelor's students were enrolled at the Unidom locations in the first semester of 2024 – 849 in medicine, 455 in healthcare, 906 in various courses, and 923 in distance learning.

“Grupo Unidom is a renowned institution with almost two decades of experience, highly regarded in the education sector, and we are proud to announce its acquisition,” says Virgílio Gibbon, CEO of Afya. “This move is in line with our business strategy and our commitment to the advancement of healthcare in Brazil.” Afya already has its own campus in Salvador, the fifth-largest city in Brazil, and expects this to become the company's largest medical school site with more than 2,100 medical students.
