A Strong Opening Weekend For RTL’s ‘Jungle Show’

Season 17 of RTL’s jungle show “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!” scored high market shares in the various target groups at the weekend. On Friday and Sunday, RTL even was the market leader in the broadcasting slot. Cora Schumacher’s surprise exit on Sunday evening generated so much viewer interest that the RTL+ servers suffered an overload.

RTL has every reason to be pleased with the strong start to this year’s “Jungle Show”: “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!” scored high market shares in the various target groups on the first few days. The first show on Friday attracted 4.71 million viewers ages 3 and up, corresponding to a 20.3 percent share of the market. Among 14 to 59-year-olds, the show drew 3.29 million viewers, for a market share of 32.3 percent – more than the opening episodes of the previous two seasons. Among 14 to 49-year-olds, “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!” actually achieved a market share of 38.8 percent, securing it market leadership among both 14- to 49- and 14- to 59-year-olds in the Friday evening slot.

The second episode of “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!” attracted large audiences at 8:15 pm: In the 14 to 59 and 14 to 49 target demographics, RTL’s “Jungle Camp” captured 20.7 percent (2.55 million viewers) and 22.9 percent (1.5 million viewers) of the market, respectively. A total of 3.71 million people ages 3 and up tuned in, corresponding to a market share of 13.2 percent.

Cora Schumacher’s surprising exit

The third episode of this year’s “Jungle Show” attracted 25.5 percent (1.87 million viewers) of the 14 to 49-year-old viewership on Sunday evening, giving it the market leadership for this slot in the target group. The show also did well in the 14 to 59 target demographic, scoring a market share of 21.0 percent (2.96 million viewers). Average viewership was 4.10 million among viewers ages 3 and up, for a market share of 13.3 percent.

Just before the third live show, Cora Schumacher had surprisingly uttered the “magic” exit sentence: “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus” (I’m a celebrity, get me out of here) and left the camp at her own request. And shortly after Sonja Zietlow and Jan Köppen announced the jungle camper’s voluntary departure and referred viewers to “Die Stunde danach” on the RTL+ streaming service before leading into the subsequent NFL game, RTL+’s servers crashed. RTL+ was available again on TV sets after a 20-minute outage. “The outage was dependent on various factors and so its duration varied widely between the various web browsers and the iOS and Android apps.” However, nobody had to miss out on the exciting events surrounding the “jungle camp”:  According to a statement from Cologne, now that all the problems have been resolved, “Die Stunde danach” from that Sunday is available to stream on RTL+, as are all the other daily after-show wrap-ups, along with the “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!” show itself. Presenters Olivia Jones and Angela Finger-Erben from “Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus! Die Stunde danach” apologized for the tech glitch on Instagram as well explaining that the servers had crashed because so many people were trying to log in to RTL+ to find out why Cora Schumacher had left the camp.
