Prestel’s illustrated volume celebrating the 125th anniversary of FC Bayern Munich is published today.
FC Bayern Munich celebrates its 125th anniversary on this very day. To mark the occasion, Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe’s Prestel imprint is publishing the official illustrated book to accompany the anniversary: “FC Bayern München: 125 Jahre Mia San Mia.” The elaborate volume is a tribute to one of the most successful and famous soccer clubs in the world. Since it was established on February 27, 1900, FC Bayern has evolved into a worldwide phenomenon that inspires millions of fans in all parts of the world.
“Mia san mia!” – the well-known slogan in the Bavarian dialect, which translates to “We are who we are,” is an expression of Bavarian pride as well as the club’s unshakeable identity and community spirit. “As a long-established Munich publishing house, we are happy and also a little proud to be publishing the official book marking the club’s 125th anniversary,” says Christian Rieker, Publishing Director at Prestel Verlag. Prestel is publishing “FC Bayern München: 125 Jahre Mia San Mia” today in parallel in a German and an English-language edition entitled “FC Bayern München: 125 Years Mia san Mia.”
FC Bayern Munich’s success story is best told in numbers: The team is a 33 time German champion, 20 time DFB Cup winner, three time Champions League and European Cup winner, and a two time World Cup winner and FIFA Club World Champion. The club also has close to 400,000 members, making FCB the sports club with the most members in the world. Founded by a handful of soccer enthusiasts in February 1900 at Café Gisela near Munich’s Odeonsplatz, the name FC Bayern Munich today stands for a soccer tradition with fans all over the world. “FC Bayern München: 125 Jahre Mia San Mia” tells the varied history of the club with its highs and lows, successes and defeats, triumphs and tragedies. Author and sports journalist Christian Eichler tells the story with a wealth of background knowledge and spectacular, sometimes previously unseen photos from the club’s archives. It is the story of the big names in the limelight as well as countless players in the background who shaped this top club and made it what it is today.
Eichler, born in 1959 in Wanne-Eickel, is one of Germany’s most distinguished sports journalists. Soccer is his pet topic and his passion. After studying library science, he began reporting on sporting events as a freelance journalist, initially on the side, for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Kicker, Welt and Welt am Sonntag, among others. From 1989 to 2023, he worked in the sports editorial department of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He lives near Lübeck.
