Afya, a Bertelsmann Education Group company, is the recipient of the 2024 Nise da Silveira Award, which recognizes special achievements in the field of mental health and inclusion. The prestigious prize is awarded by the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, the Câmara dos Deputados do Brasil. It is named after the Brazilian psychiatrist Nise da Silveira (1905 - 1999), whose work strongly influenced and humanized psychiatric practice in Brazil. Nise da Silveira rejected invasive treatments such as hospitalization in psychiatric clinics and electric shock therapy and was an advocate for C. G. Jung’s analytical psychology.

Besides Afya, another 18 companies and individuals were nominated for the Nise da Silveira Award this year. The winner was chosen by direct vote by members of parliament who are members of an advisory committee on the subject. Promoting mental health is a priority for Afya. One of the company’s key initiatives is to offer free psychological support to employees. The company also has a quality of life and well-being program to ensure a healthy working environment, and is committed to the United Nations’ #MenteEmFoco (Mind in Focus) movement.

With its mental health initiatives, Afya, as the leading provider of medical education, training and digital solutions for medical professionals in Brazil, not only addresses its employees, but also its target group of medical professionals and medical students. Afya has developed a mental health indicator specifically for them. In addition to workshops on mental health, Afya also offers therapeutic groups and extracurricular activities at all of its universities.
