Definition of Anti-Semitism
In identifying anti-Semitism, Bertelsmann follows the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).
Bertelsmann tolerates no discriminatory behavior on the basis of ethnic origin, nationality, gender, sexual orientation and identity, pregnancy or parenthood, marital status, age, religion, ideology, or disability or on any other grounds covered by a prohibition on discrimination (2.1.3 Mutual respect and trust, Code of Conduct, The Bertelsmann Code of Conduct).
To be able to identify anti-Semitism at an early stage and combat it more effectively, it is important to raise awareness of what is acceptable as an expression of opinion, and where the line to anti-Semitism is crossed. The international working definition of anti-Semitism adopted by the IHRA provides valuable guidance here and is a useful classification tool.
The European Commission and the German government follow this definition of anti-Semitism. Bertelsmann, an international media, services, and education company based in Germany, also adheres to this definition:
“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”
